Pyrite has long been known as fool's gold, thanks to its shiny yellow crystals, which fooled miners into thinking they'd hit gold. It has its benefits – the combination produces sparks when it comes into contact with steel, which can be used to ignite a fire – but it has always been seen as inferior to its prized cousin.
